Child Witness Program

Click here to view the printer friendly version.

It is estimated that one million children in Canada witness violence in the home. Witnessing violence can lead to significant behavioural, learning, physical, social and emotional difficulties. Children who witness violence are at risk for continuing the cycle of violence in their own lives when they grow up.

In the safe and structured group environment, children are able to express their feelings about violence in their lives. Through role modeling and play, children learn healthy ways of resolving conflict and increasing their self-esteem.

Children, between the ages of 4 and 16 years, who have witnessed or experienced any type of abuse in their family, may participate in this program. Group sessions involve both boys and girls and groups are organized by age.

A support group for moms whose children are participating in the child witness group is also offered. The concepts taught in the children’s group are shared with moms so that they can be reinforced at home and moms learn strategies for parenting children who have witnessed violence. Transportation or childcare subsidies may be available. For more information about this service or to make a referral, please contact the Child Witness Group Coordinator at

Children, even very young children, can witness  emotional, verbal, physical, or sexual abuse towards their mothers.

Witnessing Means

• The child sees violence;

• The child hears violence;

• The child feels tension;

• The child sees the after-effects of violence;

• The child is put in the middle

   during adult situations.
